Outdoor Shed Plans – What To Think About Before You Make a Pruchase

September 3rd, 2010

The most important thing to consider when building a shed are the plans that you will need. Outdoor shed plans are important so that the shed is strong yet totally functional. The plans that you will purchase will also hint at how much the shed will cost and the supplies needed for building.

Most outdoor shed plans will also allow for customization that will fit your personality and the job that you need it to do. Do It Yourself or DIY shed plans are not so strict or rigid that you cannot tailor the plans to your architectural design. You should definitely follow your gut when it comes to making decisions.

If for instance, you’ll want to store large pieces of equipment, you may wish to provide double doors, which would allow much easier access. A single door is a lot better than dual doors since a larger single door makes it harder for critters to get in. Also, if you want to work in this shed, consider adding a ventilation system and maybe some lights. Another great thing about DIY sheds is that you can put whatever you want on it such as a weather vane or even a wrought iron trellis for a climbing vine. So no matter what you are looking for, there is a set of DIY plans with your name on them.

Another detail to consider when looking for the right outdoor shed plans is whether you want it to match the look of your house. You don’t want to mix your styles too much like sticking a barn style shed that is painted red next to your southwestern style home; the shed would become an eyesore. You should always check with your local governmental agency and get the building codes on how big you can build, what type you can build and what other rules and regulations need to be followed.

When you purchase DIY outdoor shed plans too, run your visions by your spouse or significant other first. Because, you never know what THEY plan on doing with your shed! Building a slightly larger shed never hurts, as you never know what might end up in storage there. Imagine when you first got your garage and you were worried about if it would fit your car. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to park your car in there finally?

You can always make changes in the shed plans, by the way. You may not like the position of the doors in your plan and you might want to change them. Some do-it-yourself plans require you to put doors on the gable end. It may seem like a great idea now, but think about trying to get to items all the way in the back of the shed. And it’s always nice to not to have to start messing with wires and more building codes from your local governmental agency!

Building a DIY shed will give you a sense of accomplishment, give you more storage capabilities and you’ll save a lot more money instead of buying a ready made one!
