How To Discover More Cards For Collections Of Sports Memorabilia

August 3rd, 2010

In these days of high tech equipment and computers, it is odd to know that the collecting of football cards and sports cards still goes on with abandon. In fact, the collectors of today are far more likely to become fanatical about the hobby because they can now find anything they want online. We all probably had a brother or cousin who absolutely could not resist collecting these seemingly worthless photos of all kinds of different sportsmen. Stories of how an elusive piece was found languishing at the local yard sale abound and we all know someone who boasts of how much they would pay to get their hands on such a prize. Of course, these people do not realize that many of us have no idea what they are so excited about but still they boast!

There are different categories that people look out for more than others. For example, many people choose their favorite team and then only collect rookie photos for that season or team. They could do this every year of course if the team players change, and sometimes they get lucky by having one of a budding star in the team. These are sold for inordinate amounts of money through dealers and fairs so keeping them clean and pristine is vitally important.

Because these photos are given out free with some products, the world tends to disregard their potential value in the future. However, it is this that makes them valuable if there are not many in existence. Many a person has a tale of how their parents threw out what they considered to be rubbish only to find later that they had thrown away a way of making a lot of money.

Avid collectors will certainly know what they are looking for when they go to these fairs, but will sometimes buy up multiples of several cards which may be in short supply elsewhere. Those in pristine condition will certainly attract better prices that those that look a little dog eared so having them stored just right is very important.

Apart from the value of these photos, the action of trying to find them often sets up a web of like minded individuals who become firm friends over the years. Friendships are developed and this is a great way to have more people looking for whatever anyone is searching for wherever they go. Although most of this is done online these days, enthusiasts often meet up at the fairs etc and cement their friendships face to face.

For people who prefer to collect in a more civilized manner, there are many outlets in major cities which will have thousands of photos available of players from many different disciplines. Indeed, these places are virtual treasure troves for the avid collector and will certainly allow the collector to expand his horde. These shops also may offer the facility to swap certain photos, or multiples of photos, for one particularly expensive piece which the collector may want beyond all else.

Affordable Options For Wedding Favors

July 21st, 2010

If you are planning a wedding, you probably already know how the costs can add up quickly. From food to decorations, things add up quickly. If you want to save money on great wedding favors without spending a bundle, look for ways to incorporate your style and interests into favors that guests will love. Take a moment to think about your shared interests and passions. Is there something the two of you love to do together, or did you meet an interesting way that can be incorporated into the wedding? For instance, if the two of you met at a game, consider incorporating sports cards into the favors or if both of you settle in for Sunday afternoon pigskin games all winter, football cards might make great wedding favors.

Other ways to incorporate your favorite team into your wedding favor is with colors and logos. If you think more traditional favors would work better, but you want to pay homage to your favorite teams, consider things like candles, photo frames, or candy in the colors of your team. You can add a logo if spend a bit more.

If athletics are not what you love, there are plenty of other options. Are you and your honey art lovers? Frame a small print to share with guests. It gives them something small to display in their home that is tasteful but still reminds them of you and your wedding day. In addition to favors, the print can be used on invitations or wedding programs. If you are not art lovers but you like the idea of sharing a picture, give guests a photo of a special place or vacation destination.

Finally, you can consider using food for a favor. Even though guests will not have something a few years down the road from the wedding, they can still enjoy a treat from the big day. If you are going to give food items, select something unique and personal. Many couples just toss a few candied almonds into a bag and call it a day. If you are looking for something more creative, you have lots of choices.

Consider favorite foods you and your significant other enjoy sharing. Was your first date at a Mexican restaurant then consider making salsa and canning it for the guests to enjoy later. Are chocolates always on your Valentine’s gift list? Share these gourmet goodies with the wedding guests. If there is a special item you bake or cook that you both enjoy, you can give samples of this for guests to take home. There are small boxes and plastic bags available at craft stores and they make packaging and sharing easy. If guests leave a wedding with a special treat, they will be glad they came!

Three Behaviors That May Signify The Beginning Of Dementia

July 11th, 2010

Ben had always been able to read his dad pretty well but lately he was having a hard time discerning what was going through his mind. Much of the time his father appeared to be managing his life with no particular problems but occasionally he seemed disconnected and absentminded which worried Ben. The only time his father would seem to get excited was when they were talking about past experiences and he would even get animated telling a familiar story he recollected but anytime he was questioned about a recent happening he could not find an appropriate answer. This was confirmed the day Ben took him to a sports cards shop and his father displayed quite an interest in many old football cards that were on display there. In addition to remembering the league player highlights he could also recall where he was and what he was doing the year these events happened. This was in sharp contrast to his ability to participate in the conversation Ben tried to have with him about the big championship game they had both watched together the weekend before.

Ben rightly concluded that his father was developing early signs of dementia and he found in talking with his personal physician that he had missed the early warning signs until now. The earlier this process of deterioration is discovered the better it can be managed but it is certainly not a disease that can be cured. The diagnosis of dementia can only be made by a doctor after screening tests are given usually consisting of an MRI, blood tests and a memory test where the patient is asked a series of questions including one where he is given three words to remember and then asked in several minutes what they were. Frequently folks with dementia do not have the capacity to recall a single word in just a few minutes. The most common early warning signs of dementia are:

1. An inability to find the right word in conversations, resulting in halted speech and incomplete thoughts is something we all deal with from time to time. In people with early and moderate dementia, this becomes the customary way they can communicate and so it results in a very difficult conversation on both sides. This can be extremely upsetting to the dementia patient and the person who is trying to interpret what this person is trying to say.

2. A mounting struggle for the person to comprehend numbers and financial concepts. Often this is first obvious when someone has tremendous difficulty balancing his or her checkbook.

3. A tendency to get confused or lost in familiar places is also a key indicator of dementia. This problem unfortunately, is dangerous not only to the person with the dementia but also to others on the road if the person is still driving. It is sometimes helpful to enlist the aid of the doctor to advise his patient that it would be the best for all involved if he voluntarily decided not to drive anymore.

Are Your Baseball Cards Still Worth Keeping Nowadays?

February 17th, 2010

To distinguish it from the ordinary playing card utilized in gambling and entertainment, cards associated with games are called trading or, many times, collectible cards. Baseball cards are the most familiar, although there are also football cards, produced when the sport became very popular, and collectively sports cards, for other sports forms. Non-sports cards deal with cartoons, television, movies or comics. Logically, present cards about cartoon characters are more popular among kids than those of sports, because of the promotion of anime and comparable style cartoons.

Baseball cards were originally issued publicly in its initial forms between 1902 and 1935 that, although of cardboard, were of various sizes and dimensions. It was not uniform like those at present, and usually had misprinted or erroneous contents due to printing shortcomings. The cards were actually simply promotional gimmicks for tobacco items, chewing gum and other snacks sold during baseball games, much like the tokens in cereal boxes today. Since the cards contained information about the players, they soon became more desirable than the products they suppported.

Inasmuch as the cards could not be picked inside the packing, those who see themselves having too many cards of one player traded them with those on other players. Trading cards hence became the practice and the name. After 1936, the cards were made in standard sizes and specifications to facilitate trading, and were packaged and sold independently of other items. Baseball cards from then came into their own right as products, and not simply promotional items.

The baseball card as recognized today was conceptualized in 1952 by Sy Berger, who was an employee of the Topps Corporation. Topps was at the time a new participant into the baseball card field, having first made cards that presented Hopalong Cassidy, a well-known Western television character played by William Boyd. Sy Berger designed the card that has the name of the player, his photograph, signature, logo and team name on the front and his biography as well as some personal and game info at the back. The contemporary baseball cards still use the identical general design which has turned into a classic.

Trading cards attained their apex in the earlier 1990s, but went on a long downslide ever since, together with baseball which is gradually sinking in basketball cheers. From around 10,000 US stores selling trading cards, today there are much less than 2,000 and diminishing. Trading cards have gone down so much in worth that many cards sell today as it did 20 years ago in modified prices. They have not become collector articles but rather cards to unload quickly, accumulating dust rather than value in the cellars.

A lot of owners and hopefuls attribute this unforeseen phenomenon on eBay and analogous selling sites. All of a sudden, treasured cards are considered rare in an area became readily and inexpensively available on the Internet, so the stashed ones shed value quickly. Not only for baseball cards but also for all baseball or sports cards. It appears sports memories is ceding ground to modern monetary considerations, and more is the pity.

Dallas Stadium: Where Fans Can See The Game On Screen

December 31st, 2009

Football is a sport that has created billions of dollars in secondary revenue. Besides ticket sales and even television broadcasting rights, the business of football has flooded certain markets with money. Football has had a positive fiscal influence on everything from sports cards and football cards, to white towels, tailgate accessories, beer sales, auto sales and the post halftime careers of overexposed celebrities. Footballs influence is gigantic in terms of the sheer amount of money spent and generated directly and indirectly. Just look at the construction of a single stadium at the cost of 1.3 billion, that’s billion with a b. The Cowboy Stadium is the worlds most expensive stadium to date and has generated a wealth of design and construction fees across the world.

Think about one aspect of the stadium; the display screen. All stadiums have display screens so the crowd can feel right at home and watch the game the way they usually do at home, only they have to be dressed. In the Arlington stadium used by the Dallas Cowboys the high definition video screen is the largest in the world. How large is it? Let’s start with some perspective; realtors in the United States consider anything over 8,000 square feet to be a mansion. At 11,520 square feet the mammoth screen is bigger then most homes. It stretches nearly 60 yards filling up the space between the twenty yard lines. The screen consists of 10,584,064 LED lights making for crystal clear resolution. It is the biggest High-definition screen in the world. It has four displays; two facing the end zones and the other two facing the sidelines. It weighs nearly 60 tons and is center hung 90 feet above the playing field in the Cowboy Stadium. The smaller displays are still a huge 29 feet high and 51 feet wide. In addition to the giant center hung screens there are nearly 3,000 smaller screens hung throughout the stadium. Fans can be anywhere in the stadium and get a great view of the game without ever having to look down at the field and watch real people playing football. The cost for this screen is a mere 40 million dollars.

The stadium itself is a marvel to behold and has altered the way stadiums will be built in the future, providing the cash is available. One of the nagging problems with most stadiums are the columns that keep the stadium up. This stadium is held up by two giant steel arches giving the fans unhindered views of the field and display screens from any seat. These arches provide support for the retractable roof and the strength to support the heavy display screen. The stadium is a high tech wonder with real time concession sales reporting, wifi access, and lots of fiber optic cables to support future gadgets not yet invented.

The Dallas Stadium is the most expensive stadium ever built. While it was designed with many elaborate luxury boxes, the stated goal of the project was to provide the average fan with the best a stadium can offer. Thousands of people have been able to provide for their families while drawing a paycheck to help create this stadium.
