Jewelry Boxes For Women That Are Interesting Movie Props

August 28th, 2011

Jewelry boxes for women and Hollywood films have had a connection for a long time. Jewelry boxes have often been used as a focal point in many Hollywood films.

How often have you seen a scene where someone lifts the lid, the music starts playing and the camera focuses on the tiny ballerina continuously spinning, giving you a feeling of foreboding and even fear?
More often than not, jewelry boxes in these films hold the clues to a little girl who’s been missing or they stir childhood memories of a grown woman. At times, it may be the only tie a little girl has to her dead mother. Whatever they stand for, jewelry boxes used in films are more than just a prop. They possess a mystery within them.

One unforgettable film, which had a musical box, is the ‘Black Swan’, where Natalie Portman got the Oscar nod for her role as Nina, the frail and deeply disturbed prima ballerina. Each night she would go to bed with all her stuffed animals as she gazed at the ballerina twirling to the tune of Swan Lake. It is scenes like these that tell you that you have one disconcerting movie in your hands.

Another scary movie that effectively featured a jewelry box was ‘What Lies Beneath’ starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford. When Claire, Pfeiffer’s character, finds a jewelry box at the lake behind their house, it leads her to the truth behind the death/murder of the person whose ghost constantly reappeared before her. It seems that most movies with jewelry boxes are suspense films or psychological thrillers.

But other genres have used these boxes as props as well. Johnny Depp’s ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’ series of movies have used treasure chests and all sorts of jewelry boxes. Jewelry boxes are so attractive and interesting that some films are selling them as movie merchandise.

The very successful ‘Twilight’ series has been manufacturing Twilight Jewelry Boxes featuring Bella’s and Edward’s image on the outside of the box. On the inside, you can see the Cullen crest and hear “Bella’s Lullaby” playing.

Jewelry boxes often become heirlooms that are passed on from generation to generation. Fond memories as well as deep secrets are often attached to them. They are a symbol of something more than just the items inside, whether in real life or just in the movies.

If you keep pieces that have been given to you by important people in your life, a jewelry box can mean a celebration of love. Or it can be a reflection of your childhood. The box is a part of who you are. Just looking at it, a jewelry box may look like a storage container for all your prized possessions.

But just as in the movies, if you search further, you will find a deeper meaning behind the box which stands for the life choices you have made thus far.

Men’s Jewelry Box That Can Hold All Your Accessories

August 27th, 2011

Men also use jewelry boxes like women do. Men’s jewelry box has different uses and helps to keep things organized and in one place. It can be placed on the dressing table so that it can be readily accessed.

After taking stock of your accessories then choose one that will be able to accommodate all your stuff. Large valet boxes are available to fit in several accessories like watches, rings, cuff links, bracelets, etc. Smaller chests are designed to hold just rings, or tie pins, etc.

Jewelry Boxes available in the market are mostly made of wood, leather, and china enamel. China enamel ones are not preferred by many people, as makes an unpleasant sound when handled. As they were mostly used centuries ago, only antique pieces are available now.

When you decide to buy a valet, think of what you want to store in it. You might have a collection you would like to preserve. Make sure to choose one which is convenient to use and is spacious and secure.

Go in for one which is highly polished and has a natural glossy shine. It will be available in both dark and light colors. You could also buy an ebony finished box with the interiors lined with black suede. It has many slide out drawers for chains and bracelets.

You could choose from a wide range of colors like black, tan and green. The executive presidential chest which is made up of solid teak wood with brass hinges, lock and key and with tassel beveled edges is a good show piece. It has a shimmering gloss finished quality and a brown stain.

Men’s jewelry boxes are usually lined with ultra suede lining which is soft and supple with a sensuous touch. Another good choice would be a valet box made of dark burl wood with a walnut finish. It would be special if it has a broad elastic strap to hold your cell phone in place. Separate sections for coolers, car keys, ring holder for rings should be there. It has a very handsome and elegant look and an extra shine.

Some men’s accessory boxes have two deep pocket sections along the back where important books like organizers, telephone books, flight schedules, etc. can be kept. The recent arrival in the market is the one with the inbuilt charger. A charging station jewelry box is available, made of exotic wood like java wood, where you can charge your devices like cell phones and laptops.

In these days when fashion and style play a major role a man will be proud to own a sophisticated jewelry box.

Instead you should look on the Internet where you can find a wide range of boxes on many websites. How do you recognize a box of the best quality? It starts with the design and how the decorative elements blend with the functional elements.

In appearance, the box should convey a feeling of sophistication and elegance with lines that draw the attention of any friend or relative. The best features of the wood and the decorative elements should be brought out in the craftsmanship. The same attention to detail should be apparent in the functionality of the box.

The design should make the most economical use of space and you should expect to see features such as removable trays and flexible dividers Because every woman’s jewelry collection is unique, the storage options should be as versatile as possible. The velvet that lines the storage space should be of the highest quality so that the jewelry is completely protected.

Many different kinds of wood can be used in the making of a handcrafted wooden jewelry box. As an example, there is a rare and costly wood which is known as kauki and kauki boxes are often regarded as art objects and treasured as heirlooms. You should also ensure that the wood has the right moisture content so that it is long-lasting while retaining its color and finish.

Many manufacturers, especially mass manufacturers, without the same commitment to quality use pigment or dyes to cover blemishes or flaws in the wood. You can choose the kind of embellishment and carving that you would like on the box and you can even choose to have a name or initial carved.

Marquetry is a traditional method of decorating a box by using eye-catching patterns formed from different species of wood cut into unusual shapes The exotic appearance is caused by the contrasting grains of wood and the different colors

Great Gifts For Women: Polished Wooden Jewelry Boxes for All Seasons

July 12th, 2011

Sometimes it’s really difficult to find gifts for women who have everything who are very discerning when it comes to the products they use. If the gift is intended for someone who is keen on accessorizing, it’s always a good choice to get something to organize her extensive jewelry collection. Whether you choose small ones or bigger ones, they are valuable for keeping those precious items safe and secure.

The popularity of jewelry boxes became imminent during the 18th century. The royalty and the nobility commonly collected these precious boxes. Traditionally they were coated with enamel and lavishly decorated with gold and silver trimmings and studded with gems and precious stones.

The more expensive jewelry boxes today are made almost the same way and follow the traditional techniques. But for those who cannot afford them, there are jewelry boxes made from other types of less costly materials. There are boxes made from leather, wood veneers, plastics, and natural materials like bark, seashells, and various types of plant fibers.

Marquetry, a popular technique in woodworking, is also used in creating finely crafted jewelry boxes. This traditional art combines different colored and textured pieces of brass, bone, tortoiseshell, ivory, pewter and other raw materials. Wooden jewelry boxes are created from thin strips of assorted species of trees like oak, maple, cherry, and mahogany that give craftsmen diversity in terms of color and texture of the boxes.

These thin strips of wood, called veneers, are intricately prepared to show the natural beauty of wood grain patterns. Creating these fine wood veneers is an art that dates back in history and requires the use of special tools. Some artisans use different species of wood in order to create elaborate designs and patterns and sometimes veneers are dyed or burnt for variety.

Due to the variety of exotic trees available, wood veneers come in several grain patterns. Common species of trees include cherry, maple, birch, and oak but rare and exotic ones such as eucalyptus and rosewood are often used. The colors of wood may be limited to their natural colors of red, brown, and yellow but adding some dyes can add visual texture and balance to the overall design.

Carefully selected and finished hard wood not only reduce the cost of materials in creating fine jewelry boxes but they also give the craftsmen an extensive scope when it comes to designs. Cut timbers, when used as veneers, have repeated patterns that can be used for decorative effects. And the use of wood veneers makes these boxes more durable and allows for curves and joints to appear more polished and smoother.

With the endless variety of richly textured and colored wood to choose from, there’s also an extensive assortment when it comes to designs depending on how creative the manufacturers are. Indeed, wooden jewelry boxes make precious gifts any time of the year and they can surely make any occasion a truly memorable one. With the many different styles to choose from, you won’t run out of ideas for a finely crafted and unique box for keeping valuables and memories.

Similar to their bigger counterparts, small jewelry boxes are made from myriad kinds of materials for you to choose from.

Young or old, a small jewelry box is appreciated by most women who use it to store a few precious items. Musical versions of these boxes are largely preferred. Small boxes that are handmade can be exquisite and expensive but are a symbol of quality and status.

Such small jewelry boxes are used primarily to store delicate jewelry items inside a larger box. It helps prevent precious pieces from getting tangled up with other costume jewelry you may own. This is also a great way of preventing delicate pieces of jewelry from getting scratched or grazed.

Such kind of small jewelry boxes are also known as trinket boxes. They come decorated on the outside in several ways thus making them all the more dainty and beautiful enough to hold precious items in them. Such boxes can be made of wood, porcelain, papier mache and even stone.

Small trinket boxes meant to hold rings are usually round in shape and can hold two to three rings or have ring slots to do the job. For those who have an extensive bangle collection, a rectangular box with a central bangle holder is a good choice.

If the collection you have is a mixed lot, a jewelry box with small drawers or compartments will be the right thing to pick up. If you are looking for an expensive gift, then you can consider customizing a small jewelry box. There are numerous themes to choose from that can be carved, etched or created in different ways.

Some are even hand painted, adding to their allure and depending on tastes you can go in for anything ranging from pirate treasure chests to stone covered hearts and more. Buy Jewelry Box as a Super Present

June 23rd, 2011

When you set out to buy jewelry box, it is to house those trinkets and memories associated with the charm bracelet you bought with your first salary, or your diamond engagement ring or even the plastic ring your child gifted you on Mother’s day. Your box will be a treasure trove of these memories as well as the perfect storage place for all that you hold precious. Jewelry organizers come in so many shapes and sizes that it is natural to get confused on what to get, especially if you are unsure of what you want.

A jewelry box is just like your closet, it needs to be compartmentalized to make it easier to store and select jewelry when you are short of time. There are several factors you need to take into consideration when you begin to search for the ideal box. The size you require, material the box is made in, the compartments it has, its durability and of course its beauty.

The size of the box you choose will depend on your collection of jewelry. Some women love to collect a wide range of ornaments while others prefer sticking to the bare necessities. Some women have a fondness for rings, while others love to have chains and each will want a jewelry box that will help store these properly.

When you are looking at materials, there are many that will catch your eye. However, eternal favorites are wood, for its weight and sturdiness as well as leather; of course this last one will need appropriate care. No matter what material the box is made of, it will have to be lined with soft cloth such as velvet to protect its contents and prevent them from getting scratched.

Once satisfied with the material, you can then evaluate the construction of the box. All drawers have to fit snug, doors need to shut tight and hinges need to be strong to handle the weight. Though quite sturdy, there are some boxes that look distinctly delicate but are strong, and this works wonderfully since no one would like a tough looking box.

Since the box is meant to organize your trinkets, it should have the appropriate kinds of compartments. Each type of jewelry should have designated spots, like chains and necklaces their own hooks, bracelets their drawers, rings their slots and the like. This is to prevent jewelry from rubbing against each other and scratching their surfaces.

The design you choose for your jewelry box will depend on where you place it and what your personal tastes are. Many prefer a plain box with a high utility factor while others would like intricate wood inlay such as marquetry or even carving on the boxes. Your choice will be a reflection of your personality.

Evaluating each of these aspects will help you find a jewelry box that may wind up as an heirloom. With the collection you have and the memories each one of them holds, you are sure to have something to pass on to the next generation. A gorgeous jewelry box made by hand is a great way to pass on your legacy.

Jewellery Entrpeneur Cheek Pinchy Hand Crafts Desireable Items

April 12th, 2011

Artist Interview : Cheek Pinchy

Kirsten Turnbull is the creative Auckland artist behind Cheek Pinchy jewellery. A regular at lots of the Auckland markets, her work is certainly unique and one of a kind with many of her pieces one off’s that can’t be reproduced. Her work includes brooches, earrings, necklaces, bracelets and art-cards. We are really happy to have her join us for the very first Fair!

How long have you been creating jewellery? From a young age I believed the only people who were inventive could draw an ideal pony out of their heads. Therefore , I lived a lot of my life believing I did not have a creative bone in my body! I have attempted various small projects over time but never with much success. I certainly had no aim that other folks would see them let alone need to own any! Ideas have always bubbled about in me though and that was about two years ago that I started the very beginnings of Cheek Pinchy. Was just the appropriate time I think!

How did Cheek Pinchy jewellery start? It was about two years ago when I was full time at home with my gorgeous child and I really wished to have a creative outlet. I had been collecting vintage fabric and bits for years and thought I want to have a go at stitching but my skills are Awfully limited! I was finding it too frustrating and realized my passion lay with putting colour and pattern together instead of with stitching. The idea to start one off collage cards using vintage photographs was born! Within just a few months Toggle had started selling the cards and Esther Lamb encouraged me into the market scene. During the last two years I have experimented with all kinds of projects including wall blocks and snow globes and now have a full jewellery range. I would never have believed two years ago that I would be doing what I do now! It has actually been a private growth journey and I am slowly getting over my embarrassment and underconfidence!

Describe what you create? A lot of what I create now could be the Cheek pinchy jewellery range. It’s a full range that includes brooches, rings, earrings, necklaces and bangles. The photographs all come from vintage books and have been set onto a beech plywood base. I have a choice of jewellery that utilises limited numbered reproduction photographs and also some one off items. The most recent reproduction range is made of mainly bird, floral and botanical images. When I am getting time I like continuing to make one off cards and wall blocks in a collage style.

What inspires you? I’m galvanized by the support of my family, the grace of creation and the legacy of my gramps who always discussed the 1950′s and 60′s as ‘the golden years ‘. I’ve a love of all things vintage and a particular obsession with all things related to deer, birds, military and nautical themes! I am also inspired by colour mixtures and the way that different colors stimulate strong emotional response in people.

What are your favourite materials to use? Why are they your favourite? My favourite material to use is vintage books especially children’s books. I love opening them up to learn the musty, earthy smells, the yellowed and stained pages, the front cover inscriptions and ‘extra ‘ illustrations their kid owners have given them over time.

What would you say is your biggest achievement to date? I think the last few years have seen my biggest feats that being tackling the task of maternity, coming to terms with issues of my own youth and following my passions through building Cheek Pinchy. Apart from all that I was a bit of a whizz at jazzercise in the 80′s. Complete with my hot pink lycra tights, leotard and leg warmers, I was a force to be reckoned with!

Have you got any future plans for your jewellery? I find making future plans for Cheek Pinchy a little scary as I am astounded by what has happened in the last couple of years already. I definitely have other product ideas bobbing around but am going to let things grow organically at this point.

Where are your favourite places on-line? I whiz all over the place online mainly blog jumping but I always check in on the latest strategies on Post Secret and tantalizing finds on Etsy.
What kind of music do you like listening to while you’re employed, if any? I have got a awfully eclectic musical taste but my favourite music to work to is super kitsch 80′s pop! Nothing really gets you going like Spandau ballet, Wham!, Cyndi Lauper, David Bowie, Culture Club, Duran Duran…did I mention Jazzercise earlier.. ?
