How To Benefit From The Knowledge Of Model Train Stores In Your Vicinity

September 1st, 2010

Model trains stores can be expensive, but then it’s the expert advice you are paying for. If you are a beginner then model trains stores should be your first stop.

Take note that I said model trains stores and not hobby shops, because they are very different.

Hobby shops are usually staffed by people that are not experienced model railroaders, while model trains stores are usually owned by very well experienced model railroaders.

Creating your own model train world is the most enjoyable past time in my opinion. There is no other hobby where you can learn a complete new range of skills in one place.

Building a model train layout exposes you to planning, design, woodwork, metalwork, wiring, electronics, kitbashing, scratchbuilding and so much more. But, you don’t need to know it all when you start.

The model trains stores are filled with skilled and experienced people willing to advise you.

So, is building a model railway an expensive hobby?

The expense is based on the decisions you make. These are the 3 model train mistakes you should try to avoid:

1 – Not Knowing What You Want

Most model train beginners start with an electric train set that may come with a figure 8 track, an engine, some freight cars and a power pack. Often this is because it is more economical to buy the complete set rather than buying each component separately, but you get what you pay for.

When you try and add more track to expand the small oval or figure eight, the problems start.

The power pack in the electric train set may have only been designed to power the oval or figure 8 length of track. When you add extra track, the power pack is now not powerful enough. This results in a voltage drop on the track and intermittent starting and stopping of the locomotive. This can be very frustrating.

2 – Building a Model Train layout That Is Too Big

The impressive model railroad layouts at the local shows are enough to inspire beginners to go home and convert their shed into a huge model railway.

Some of those experts have spent in excess of 20 years on their layouts. A beginner trying to achieve that level of expertise from the beginning will be very frustrated.

Often the smallest of layouts can be more fun because they get to a level of enjoyable operation quicker. The experience adds up over the years and a small layout is always easy to expand.

3 – Paying Full Retail Price

Pay full retail price for every part of your model railroad and it is going to be an expensive hobby.

Your local model railway club will have members with locomotives, cars, buildings, etc. in good condition that they will sell at a fraction of the new price. Model railroaders are generous people and willing to help beginners.

Understanding Model Railroad Scales

April 26th, 2010

How old you are can play a big part in the trains you’ll select. Very young youngsters may be fascinated by electric trains, but they certainly won’t be able to set them up and run them. A lot of people think that children shouldn’t be given electric trains until they are nine years old or older. In my opinion think 6 is a good age to transition from toy trains and battery operated trains to real electric trains.

I recommend GeoTrax to a lot of people with young children since the curves are designed so that no matter how a child assembles them the track pieces will always line up. It’s the only product I found that had this capability. With GeoTrax children can easily learn about laying out railroad track without the frustration of having to redo sections of it because the pieces don’t fit properly.

Electric Train Scales

When deciding on a scale, its significant to remember, that the larger the number in the proportions the smaller the model will be. Case in point, HO is 1:87.1, or about half the size of O gauge at 1:48.

When referring to a narrow gauge railroad, it’s normal to see n3 or in the case of O scale there’s “n3″, “n2″ & “n30″ The “N” refers to narrow, and the trailing number refers to the gauge (the width) of the tracks. So, HOn3 would be HO scale, 3′ narrow gauge On30 would be O scale, 30″ narrow gauge; On2 would be O scale, 2′ narrow gauge. I hope that helps you to better understand this. Does this make it easier to understand?

(more support – to less). It doesn’t mean the less common or less popular scales or not as good. scales have a larger base, thus making it somewhat easier to find.

Having adequate space is a concern when choosing a scale. It’s important to pick a scale that will work well in the area you have. It’s not very smart to choose O scale, if you only have a 1′ wide shelf to use set it up.

You can find lots of layout plans online Model railroaders’ home pages and model electric train manufacturers websites are good places to look. If your looking to buy a model electric train, parts and supplies have a look at http://electrictrain.org/.
