The Effects Of Jobs On Your Leisure Pursuits, And How You Can Try To Balance Them Out.

September 16th, 2010

At times your Career can seem to take up a great deal of your time, leaving you no time to do the things you like doing. For some this can be a bit of a burden, and negatively impact your life, as you find yourself unable to do the hobbies you like. I am going to talk about how this has affected me personally, and what I have done in order to attempt and handle the situation, to provide myself more free time to do the things I like doing.

One the main things I did was get a New career, one not so far from home so I wasn’t wasting as much time commuting to and from work. This has been a big help, as in my old job I was at times having to spend over an hour in the car getting to and from work, whereas now my present Career is a nice 5 minute journey in the car, and 10 minutes in bad traffic. This helps free up quite a lot of time over the course of a week, granting you more time to get the everday jobs and things out of the way, and start on to the cool stuff. I am also starting a New career working from home, with the aim of giving myself even more free time to follow leisure activities, but this is a more long-term project.

Another advantage of aiming for New careers which are a bit nearer to home is it allows you to get two birds with one stone – I have found the proximity of my new career to my home has permitted me to cycle into work. This is good as it means I am getting a lot more exercise than previously, but the commute still is not as big as it was previously. This means I don’t feel as if I also must try and use some of my free time keeping fit, so again more free time for me. Looking for New careers that permit you to work neasr to home can occasionally be tough to find however, so you might need to be prepared to relocate in some cases.

Another way I have strived to free up more of my spare time is by preparing a timetable of sorts, and trying to get myself into a set regime of housework. This has helped me massively, as it means I am not leaving housework right until the last minute, and then having to spend an entire morning and afternoon finishing the housework, which then means I cannot be fussed to do anything in the evening. I do not stick to the timetable unbendingly, but I have discovered it ispretty beneficial to have it as a kind of guide to follow, so work that must be done is being done on time and not left until the last minute.

It can be quite difficult to balance your Career and your hobby, and these are just some of the steps you can take to try and free up more of your time.

Different Careers That Are Available To People Who Enjoy Magic: The Gathering.

September 7th, 2010

Magic: The Gathering is a massively popular trading card game, or TCG, which has been available for over 12 years now. It has grown in popularity over the past few years, and contests are held all over the country in different locations. I wish to take a look at the various Careers which exist which will attract people who have an interest in Magic: The Gathering, as it is a good thing when people are able to get a New career which is directly related to something that they like doing, in this case playing Magic. This will help anyone searching for New careers which are directly related to the Magic: The Gathering card game, so they can make sure they get a great job that they can flourish in.

Now there are many different Careers you can go into which are related to this specific card game. One of the more obvious jobs to me would be a stockist, selling the cards in bulk packs, or splitting them up and selling individual cards. Now for anyone who knows the game pretty well, you may generate good money doing this, as many cards are rather valuable. For mainstream games and recent expansions typically cards will cost in the region of around 1 or 2 pounds, but some can go as high as 20. In fact, although you are chanced to never, ever see one of these cards, there are some rather old cards from the initial expansion, which are very expensive – one of the most expensive cards known as ‘Black Lotus’ can sell for upwards of £600 on ebay. That’s a huge amount of money for a flimsy bit of card! While you are never really going to see figures like that, there is still great money to be made if you are aware of which cards are popular, which are rare, and things like that. So in general a good knowledge of the game and its mechanics will help you out here.

Another New career which the more creative among you will be able to look into is to be an artist for Magic: The Gathering. Now there is a great deal of fierce competition here as there so often is when it comes to art, so you will have to be incredibly good. Expansions are released every two years, and each release will include over 500 cards, each of which will posses their own individual artwork. A lot of artists are commissioned to paint or draw just for magic, so if you are fortunate enough to get into this line of work you will benefit from a pretty regular income.

There are so many different New careers here – more than we can properly list in one go. Other examples include making a career out of winning, by taking part in contests which are held around the world. You might even want to be an author, and write books which relate to the universe that the card game is based in. There are many interesting Careers you can get into if you really put your mind to it, and you have the focus and commitment to succeed.

Unique Roles Utilising Your Talents As A Craftsman

September 7th, 2010

Countless people have a hard time with Career Choices, there is a lot out there, how are you supposed to know what’s going to suit you best? Well the truth is, it doesn’t always have to be complicated, everyone has things that they are competen¬t at, why not simply apply those abilities to New Careers? Certainly it’s not often quite that straightforward, but it is something that everyone ought to take into consideration more often, usually people will neglect some of their talents when looking for a job. One such group of Careers that we will be thinking about is that of crafts. Countless people perform different crafts as a hobby, sometimes it might be used as a means of earning a little money through market sales and car boot sales, but it’s not very often it’s considered as a career option.

So what sort of crafts can be turned into Careers? Well, more or less any of them really. You might be working with woods, metals, paper, card, precious stones and jewels and plenty more. Generally the higher paid and more well known crafts Careers are working as a carpenter or a goldsmith/silversmith, these roles are still well accepted and an experienced craftsman can earn a decent income working for some of the big name retailers or even self employed. Other crafts can perform just as well however, it just takes a bit of creativity. Other crafts that are familiar hobbies, but less thought of as Career Choices can include making things like handmade cards for birthdays and similar occasions. Cards have become more and more popular over the years and it’s now quite common to see “handcrafted” items for sale in plenty of retail stores, so it’s not just markets where you can sell your work.

The nicest thing about these New Careers is that there are no tough requirements for receiving a job. There are no mandatory qualifications for the most part, maybe some of the best paid positions might ask for some, but a lot of positions will need only your skills and talents. This means that any person who is good at crafts can think about going into these Careers, you don’t have to use years studying a course to make your CV look good, generally you would have some kind of portfolio of your work and examples to reveal to potential employers. Of course if you decided to go self employed like plenty of other crafters choose to do, then you definitely don’t require any kind of qualification at all and you don’t have to prove your skill to anyone but the customers.

Careers in crafting can be hard to get going, typically there are big retailers that people prefer to go to for the convenience, for example carpenters will find that many people just choose to go to places like Argos and IKEA for their furnishings. The good thing is though, your work is usually a much greater quality and is unique, so you can fetch a good price for each piece. The work is hard, but if you’re willing to put the time into it, it could all pay off quite nicely.

Enjoyable Roles Inside The Games Workshop

August 29th, 2010

Tabletop wargames are a reasonably popular hobby for many people. Their birth comes all the way back from the 1800’s where similar boards were utilised to re-enact battles for instructional purposes. The game of Kriegspiel was made in 1811 and has a few similarities to today’s versions of wargames. Nowadays we see well known brands like Warhammer, which is a game using miniature soldiers that are put together and painted in an assortment of ways. The players then battle their forces against each other using dice and tactics. One well known collection of stores that sell these models is the Games Workshop and we are going to be going over what it is like taking on one of the Career Choices obtainable in the stores.

There are many Careers available within the Games Workshop, it’s not all focussed in the stores. For example there are New Careers obtainable in miniatures design or working on the website team. These Careers offer some exciting opportunities to get involved in the game on a whole other level. There are of course some fairly high qualifications desired for things like this though, so the major thing we are going to be discussing is beginning New Careers within the retail stores. Yes these jobs are perhaps the lowest starting point in what Games Workshop has to give, but they may also be some of the best fun you’ll ever come across in a job.

The main responsibilities of these roles are no doubt to look after the shop and sell the goods to customers, just like any other store position. The main difference here though, is that you are employed in a shop surrounded by one of your favourite pastimes, and it doesn’t stop there. In store there are usually gaming sessions happening all day, events for new players and much more. As an employee of the store you can join in on this action, taking part and managing everything to keep it organised. If you ever visit a Games Workshop store you’ll see precisely what I mean, the moment you go through the door you’ll be greeted and introduced. You’ll be asked if you’re accustomed to the game and if not, the employees have no problem in using 15 minutes to demonstrate to you the core mechanics of the game. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising if the staff spent more time playing games and managing events than they do behind the counter.

Getting these Careers isn’t too difficult as you can likely imagine, after all it is a retail store and reasonable grades in GCSE English and Maths will be adequate. The main thing the employer will look for is of course a strong passion for the game and a friendly and confident personality, so if you’re hunting for New Careers and have a genuine appeal in the Warhammer games then you can’t really go wrong with this. Sure there might not be many options for progression in the store, you’d only really be looking at moving into a manager’s role, but it’s not the development that you’d go there for. You’d be taking on these Career Choices because you’d be in a friendly, upbeat environment, working with a product that you like and can enjoy every day.

Getting A New Job As A Warhammer Painter, And How You Might Make A Successful Career From Doing Something You Enjoy.

August 28th, 2010

Warhammer is an extremely popular game, which revolves around making and painting your own armies of figures, and then fighting them against other people at home or at the many tournaments and games night which are held on a recurring basis around the country. Due to the characteristics of the game, Warhammer for some people is big part of their lives, with people dedicating hours and hours to constructing and painting their figures ready for use. This means that there is typically a great deal of potential here for different Careers which revolve around the game, especially when it comes to painting the figures. I am going to talk about the potential for people who have the talent to start a New career as a painter for Warhammer, and the several options you have open to you for making money. As far as New careers go this really is only going to be good for people who already have a huge interest either in Warhammer or painting the figures – if you are hunting for a New career path to start on and are just hunting for some ideas I suggest researching the game of Warhammer itself first of all.

Now if you are considering New careers which will allow you to paint Warhammer figures to earn a salary, you will of course need to be very good at it. Now there are numerousvariations you can do on this particular style of career, and the wonderful thing about it is you can usually dictate how much work you undertake. Some people just enjoy doing this work part time, as an addition to another job they already have going, whereas some might wish to take it on full time. Most of the money making work comes from charging people to paint their own minatures for them, so they can obtaina professional look for their armies which they may not be able to attain by themselves. Some of the work can be pretty time consuming, so you can charge rather a lot, as long as you can live up to the quality you are charging for! The figures themselves are pretty small, so an incredibly steady hand is needed to be able to gain the highest levels of details from the figures. Another alternative people pursue is to paint figures and dioramas to incredible standards, and enter them into competitions to win prizes. This is the most difficult one to do as a full time job, as of course it is incredibly competitive, and you are not guaranteed any income. For this reason people either do this whilst they maintain other Careers, or augment with painting other peoples figures as commission work. Doing it this way is a highly popular choice, as it gives you the best of both worlds – you are able to spend a lot of time practising your technique, and you are earning a living whilst doing it.

So as you can see it is feasible to have a fulltime job as a painter for Warhammer. It is quite challenging, and you really need to be extremely dedicated to this subject, but if you are it can be a very rewarding career path for you to go down.

A Sample Of Just A Few Of The Various Careers Which Are Offered Within The Movie Industry.

August 14th, 2010

There are lots of different Careers existing within the movie industry, too many in fact to look at all in one go. However I would like to take a look at some of the more popular Careers which are on offer, to provide people an idea of what’s on hand. So if you are searching for a New career and wish for something that’s linked in with the movie industry, then maybe you will acquire some new ideas, or maybe just a better idea of what is expected from any Careers you have been thinking about.

The most obvious job most people will think about when considering New careers within the movie industry are Careers as an actor or actress. Now of course these Careers are incredibly tough to get started on, as there is a huge amount of competition out there for these Careers. In order to have a chance at making a thriving career as an actor or actress you must not only be gifted, but also very dedicated and committed to making it succeed. It is undeniably an incredibly tough job to get started in, but also a brilliant one to succeed in.

Another one of the big careers within the movie industry is of course the role of director – the person who oversees overall development and creation of a movie, and has the concluding say on how the completed movie ultimately looks. Now again becoming a director is extremely hard, you must be extremely talented, and you need to be able to produce work that appeals to your selected market. As a director you can start out directing your own low budget movies, and hope that these are picked up on by someone within the mainstream industry. Again, an incredibly hard job to get into, but a fantastically rewarding one should you succeed.

There are many other New careers accessible as well for people within the movie industry, roles which are a lot more behind the scenes, but are just as crucial to the creation of the film as some of the more known careers. Some of these roles include jobs such as make-up artists, which can differ from just touching up the make-up of the main actor, to creating full facial masks for people in the next sci-fi action film. There are even just casual roles available, helping out making sets, or keeping them clean, and these casual roles can help you progress into a proper job, as you gain experience, and can start making a name for yourself. This is usually the key point of entry for the majority of people into the movie industry, but you will have to be ready for a lot of competition and rejections – it will take a lot of perseverance in order to make it big in this industry.

Of course this is just a fairly small overview of what Careers are available in this industry – as mentioned there are simply too many to list in one article alone! A good place to research what is on offer is the internet, where you can discover information on the more specialist Careers which are available. You can also use it as a source of information to discover what films are being considered for development, and what are in development, and see if there are any jobs on hand to help out.
