Costume Fun For Everyone

August 12th, 2010

Emulating cartoon characters that I watched was one of my favorite things to do when I was just a child. Whether it be American or Japanese cartoons, once I have taken interest in a character, there’s no stopping me. And because of this, my family regularly gives me costumes of my favorite cartoon characters, for they are rather supportive of me and any hobbies that I may have. Oh, I was so happy at that time! Rather than just acting like my favorite characters, I can now look just like them. I would wear these costumes everyday, preferably at night because it is more comfortable.

I don’t wear costumes regularly now that I’m now a grown up. Despite of that, my interest in costumes remains the same. Today, I have many hobbies, but one of them is definitely collecting costumes. The costumes now are truly highly detailed now compared to back then, in which I am truly fascinated. When I have the time, I would go online and browse for costumes. While browsing, I would see different kinds of costumes like Superman Costumes, the Simpsons costumes, a Naruto Costume (from the Japanese Anime), StarCraft costumes, a Mr Potato Head Costume, and much more. The sight of such costumes really makes me happy.

Halloween and Christmas are the usual seasons that you can wear your costumes, for during these seasons many people are throwing costume parties. However, there are now costume roleplay or more commonly known as “cosplay” conventions. In cosplay conventions, people gather together wearing various kinds of costumes. Though initially a foreign word to Americans, people in the west are now accepting the word cosplay that is first coined in Japan. Cosplay in America and Japan are almost the same, with their difference lies on the characters found in such events. For example, American cosplayers commonly feature western characters, so you will see people wearing a Batman costume, a Shrek costume, or a Mr Potato Head Costume during these events. Japanese cosplay, however, commonly feature anime characters. But still you will see anime characters in western cosplay conventions and vice versa, for this rule is really not written in stone.

Another fun thing about being a cosplayer is that you can wear costumes not intended for your gender. Without raising suspicions about your gender preference, you can crossdress during cosplay conventions. So, during such events you will commonly see a boy wearing a Sailor Moon costume or a girl who wears a Mr Potato Head Costume.

Making your fantasy a reality though clothes, costumes are really an interesting thing. Because it really is fun, many adults have joined the costume craze. As for me, I think when I have the time I will join some of these events, for they seem a lot of fun. I suggest that you should try it at least once. Millions of happy cosplayers can’t be wrong, after all!
