Exquisite Marquetry Adorned Jewelry Box for Women

Women, generally, cherish their jewelry; it usually doesn’t matter to them if the jewelry is cheap or costly or if it is a souvenir or has some sentimental value attached to it. The same care and attention are equally bestowed on each piece. So it is not surprising that a jewelry box for women is a totally welcome gift.

Considering the importance that women attach to their jewelry, a handcrafted wooden jewelry box would make an ideal gift for any occasion. It not only keeps the jewelry from being misplaced or getting tarnished, it also helps in organizing it into sets.

And a jewelry box that is adorned with exquisite wood inlay like marquetry, would perfectly blend with the furniture and also enhance the decor of the room. Marquetry is a form of ancient art that involves wood inlay using burls and veneers of rare and exotic woods to form intricate patterns and images.

The easiest and simplest form of marquetry is done using just 2 sheets of veneer. Or it can use up to six sheets of very thin veneers for more complicated and intricate patterns. It is common to use the veneers and burls of very exotic and rare kinds of wood from all over the world.

The colors and natural grain patterns of the different kinds of wood lend beauty to the different designs. Marquetry involves cutting through a stack of thin veneers of different colors and grain patterns with a sharp and fine saw or knife. This produces several interesting pieces of different colors and grain patterns but with the same design that is arranged carefully on different pieces of work to give a totally unique look.

For instance, using veneers of Hard Sugar Maple and Holly for cutting out leaves would leave you with a reddish brown leaf and an almost white leaf. These can be placed in interesting patterns on any surface. The veins on the leaves are produced by cutting very thin lines into the veneer and filling it up with a mix of sawdust and epoxy.

Interestingly with time, Holly veneer if finished well, takes on a fascinating golden hue. This makes it look like some genuine gold inlay work that only on closer inspection would reveal that it is a piece of wood! As the colors of wood are limited to reds, browns, and rarely whites, to create colorful patterns and images, it is common practice to use dyed veneers. Veneers are dyed by infusing the dye under high pressure to force the dye to run right into the veneers. Then it is sanded completely and you have an exotically colored piece of wood .

Marquetry goes back some 3000 years when it was a very long and excruciatingly painstaking process. Exquisite marquetry designs made out of wood and other natural materials have been unearthed at various archaeological excavations . It is thought that this art form originated in Egypt and was quite predominant in India, China, Japan, and Persia (modern day Iran).

Although the several advances in technology and modern power tools have drastically reduced the time taken by this process, a lot still depends on the skills of the individual artist to produce a beautiful and breathtaking finished product.
