How A Random Shopping Trip Led To Me Having To Carry Out Simple Maintenance On My Girlfriend’s Car, Including Obtaining And Fitting Replacement Wiper Blades

September 4th, 2010

It was literally a couple of weeks ago that the weather was sunny and the days were prolonged and boiling, but now the days are getting shorter and they always seem to be rainy. It was on one of these rainy days that my girlfriend wanted to go shopping; normally I would have driven to the stores, but my vehicle was getting checked over at the peugeot garage. On the way home from the stores, the overcast skies started to darken and it began to pour down. My girlfriend turned on her windshield wipers and all that they did was smear the down pour across the windshield. This was because her wiper blades had worn out at the time and she need to purchase a new set. As she is a little younger than me, and I knew that they had added simple checks to the driving exam now, I asked if she was going to obtain replacement wiper blades. She turned to me and said a thoughtful male would do that for her, so I got the hint that I would have to obtain some replacement wiper blades and fit them for her. This is when I had to ask if she had inspected the oil levels, water levels or perhaps the tyre pressures since the last time the vehicle had been checked over, the reply was no and that was what thoughtful males were for, and at this point I knew that I had a few checks to carry out on her vehicle.

When we arrived back from retail therapy it had stopped raining, so my girlfriend went in the house to prepare some food for us both and I turned to the vehicle and began work. I thought I better begin by looking at the wiper blades on her vehicle makes website, as I could not obtain a correct oil level check from the vehicle until it had cooled down. The first thing I did was measure the wiper blades so that I knew what size replacement wiper blades to obtain, and in completing this I discovered the wiper blades were not just destroyed but they had began to split and the frames had broken away from the wiper blades in various locations. After we ate snacks I observed the vehicle and the correct oil that was needed, the vehicle had been sitting for probably an hour now and I thought I could get a fairly accurate level check from the engine oil, it was a little on the low side but above the minimum. I did a visual check on the cooling water as the engine was still warm, this could have indicated that it was still pressurised and should not be opened. As a result, I could see the level on the blue plastic water bottle and it looked within the required level. Following this, I had a look at the tyres once more, but it had to be a visual check as I had not got my pressure gauge or tread measure on my person. After a look round all four tyres and giving them a little kick for good measure, I determined that they were fine and there was plenty oftread still on them.

My vehicle was ready to be picked up from its service now so we went to get it, and on the journey home I stopped in the nearby motor parts supplier which fortunately was just round the corner from the dealership. After spending some time checking out all the replacement wiper blades I selected a pair of flat wiper blades. I had not seen this type before and they did look awesome and also because they were created from silicone, they came with a one-year guarantee. I also bought a litre of engine oil, and when I got back to my girlfriends residence I attached the %KLINK3% and put a couple of glugs of oil in the engine, bringing it back up to the necessary level. I also made a mental note to buy myself some flat wiper blades as I needed to replace my wiper blades and also that I would have to remember to check my girlfriends vehicle more frequently.
