Felis catus, or more popularly known as cats are little domesticated mammals that are valued by many people for the companionship they give. They are also valued for their ability to hunt many household pests due to their adaptability, rapid breeding rate, and predatory instincts which makes them very effective hunters. Cats, which can be found almost everywhere on earth, is currently the most popular pet in the world. Humans and cats have been associated with each other at approximately 9,500 years.
These days, cats are very popular, especially with today’s mass media technology. There were many “cat actors” around. There was also a musical and it’s film adaptation that is named “Cats”. Lastly, there exists many cartoon characters that are based on cats. Who hasn’t heard of Garfield? Or maybe the Puss in Boots? Or even Meowth, Persian, Skitty, Delicatty, Glameow, and Purugly of the famous Pokemon? This great number of cat characters is a testament to their popularity now. Some kids even dress up as a cat or a cat cartoon character during Halloweens. I often see during the Halloween children dressed as Garfield or wearing a Puss in Boots Costume. They even “meow” while wearing their Garfield or Puss in Boots Costume to make their costume more convincing.
However, there also exists dogs, which are a hindrance to a cats rise in popularity. Dogs are also popular today. What the cats have, they can also have. Some even say that dogs are equally, or even more, popular than their feline counterparts. But still, more people prefer cats over to dogs. Maybe the reason for this is that cats are naturally cute and gentle, unlike some, but not all, dogs. But we should let the dog lovers have their own say about this. Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion, remember that.
Especially over the mass media, the popularity of cats are continuously growing each day. Because of a cats charm and cuteness, more people are starting to like them.
