Learning the Proper Layout for a Circuit Board

You may be surprised to find out that how you choose to design the layout of your custom printed circuit board is every bit as important as how you design both the overall functionality and the components. Each decision involving the layout will directly impact the tasks and overall performance of the board. These decisions are called circuit board layout effects.

It isn’t necessary for you to be an electrical engineer to be able to create your own circuit board, however, it does take some skill and understanding of the basic circuit board effects. In order to begin, here are a few we put together that will help you gain some understanding how these effects can largely impact the performance of your custom printed circuit board.

Power Consumption
In order to cut down on excessive power consumption, make sure to make your wires and traces as short as possible. A custom printed circuit board with long wires and long traces consumes more power than those with shorter wires and tracers.This is because the longer the wires and traces, the more energy is consumed. Keep your circuits running with the least amount of power necessary to increase their efficiency.

Power Line Noise
Ground supply lines and voltage commonly bring noise to the circuit. You can cut down on this noise in several ways. First, you can help filter out the noise by putting capacitors on both power and ground lines. Removing the interference between the two is another tactic that can work for you when you make the distance larger between the ground line traces and the voltage which should help reduce the noise. Typically a combination of both these techniques will produce the best results.

Electrical Signal Speed
Electrical signal speed is also influenced by wire length just the same as it is with power consumption. Additionally, the number of circuits on the board effects the speed as well. Just like power consumption, the fewer and the shorter the better. You want a circuit to have as fast an electrical signal speed as possible. Reduce excess distance, and remove excess components to increase efficiency.

Reliabilty and Manufacturing Yield
While it may seem an unlikely comparison to draw, baking and PCB manufacturing are both similar to baking in the sense that a circuit board may perform great in small batches but when the “recipe” is doubled or tripled into larger commercial-size batches, problems may arise. Poorly laid out circuits will often fail when produced in mass quantities. Be sure to concentrate on the first three items in this list to avoid these large-batch PCB manufacturing problems.

While circuit board layout effects have been explored in full books, most performance issues can be bypassed by following the methods which are discussed here. Much like an eco-system, circuit board design effects the entire system entirely, nothing is totally independent of the rest. You can avoid most difficulties by planning your moves ahead of time.
