Sell Stock Photography — Do Not Waste Your Time On Creating Sunsets And Clouds, Most Stock Sites Have More Than Enough Of Them

October 26th, 2010

Want to know the best place to sell stock photography and the best images to create? I will tell you.

Before you sell stock photography know what most sites already have enough of, and probably won’t want from you. Don’t waste your time with images no one needs. There might be exceptions to this.

Unless they are incredibly unique you should not waste your time on things like creating sunsets and clouds. Stock sites have more than enough of them.

Originality is what you want when getting started with stock sites. How come? Already they have archives of millions of photos. In this endless sea of imagery you have to stand out from the crowd. Be different, original, and awesome!

If you can be conceptual this is the best way to go. Add to the concept category at stock sites and you will win.

This is a short list of photos to avoid if you want to sell stock photography:

No Sunsets & clouds

No Forest Snap Shots

No Pets Like Your Dog Or Cat
A big no no for pets.

Forget Flowers
The most obvious thing, and these sites have enough of them.

Flags
No flags.

Photoshop Backgrounds
Are not stock.

Now these are the things to focus on if you want to sell stock photography:

Food and Beverage
Get people to hold it.

Corporate Photos
People in suit’s.

Teams, Groups
The more the merrier, get people into the group.

Concept
For most people this is the hardest and most creative, and challenging category: don’t create the obvious.

Sport Shots

Illustrations
Vector.

Seasonal Themes
Christmas, Valentines, Easter, the usual.

Yes, if you do it the right way, it is really not hard to sell stock photography. Just follow my suggestions, then you will sell stock photography. Give the popular stock sites and costumers, what they need and want.

Experiment and be creative.

Sell stock photography at Shutterstock.com or Istockphoto.com. Why? Because these are the best and most popular sites, reach the largest audiences, and you will reward you for your effort.
