Over time I’ve observed one thing. Everyone, and I mean everyone has a simple wish to learn music of some kind! Having played guitar for some time, I am constantly interested to discover how a ‘non musician’ sees music, so every time I’m out and I meet new people I normally ask if they play a musical instrument, and more typically I ask “if you could ever learn any instrument on the planet, which one would it be and why?” the response you might have guessed it’s relatively common.
Drums or guitar for boys and piano for girls. I do believe when most of the people tell me that they really want to learn a musical instrument, and I also believe them whenever they hesitantly admit that they merely can’t spare the time required to deal with learning a musical instrument, not to mention purchasing one.
The guitar is therefore probably the most common instrument chosen by people. How come?
After spending some time considering it I came to a few conclusions. A major reason is practicality!
Investing in a guitar is certainly cheaper than investing in a drum kit or perhaps a piano along with being easier to carry around. It’s also easier to cover many genres of music using a guitar. You’ll be able to play ballads just as easily as you can play rock anthems. The guitar’s got it all!
Granted, individuals have different aims with regards to what they desire to accomplish when they learn a musical instrument,but the majority of individuals are just pleased to learn a few chords and methods to allow them to play their favorite songs, and just mess around using the acoustic guitar after work. This brings me to my personal favorite reason why people like to play guitar – it’s therapeutic.
Some individuals recognize this, and most people smile in agreement after I share this thought with them. Coming home from work or school and playing a couple of popular chords while your brother/sister/mate/uncle/evil-monkey-in-the-closet is busy searching the lyrics on their phone or laptop, is just relaxing and enjoyable.
So embrace the desire, act on it, make music…
